Evaluations for Children

In the majority of cases children are brought for neuropsychological evaluations when their performance in school is not up to expectations or when their behavior, either in school or at home is disruptive. There are many reasons why children struggle. Two of the most common are learning and attention problems. However, many children are born with difficulties that keep them from doing things that other children take for granted. Disorders such as autism, Asperger's, Klinefelter's, traumatic brain injury and various endocrine issues are just some of the factors that can impact your child. Regardless of the cause, the child's deficits usually appear in poor academics and behavior problems, which is stressful on the whole family. the purpose of the neuropsychological evaluation is to provide a thorough understanding of the diagnosis, its possible causes and what needs to be done to help the child to be and feel more effective. This includes helping the parents, teachers and medical doctors that work with the child.
Evaluations for children may be sought if:

1. Problems with attention, focusing and impulsivity are affecting the child's ability to function effectively in school or at home. The evaluation will help determine what is causing the problem, including ADHD and what can be done to alleviate the problem.

2. Learning problems in the areas of reading, math and writing preventing the child from completing school and homework in a timely and effective manner. The evaluation will determine if a learning disorder is responsible for the difficulty and determine the type of interventions necessary to improve academic functioning.

3. Developmental disorders are affecting the child's functioning. The evaluation can determine what areas of functioning are being impacted and assist in developing a treatment plan that will improve overall level of functioning.

4. Services or treatment that are being provided are not effective. Many times children have already had educational or psycho-educational testing done and services provided by the school or treatment by other professionals, but progress is slow. The evaluation can assist in modifying the services and treatment so that they are better taylored to meet the child's needs.
